review 2: There were points where I didn't like the book, and then places where I really enjoyed it. I think that's kind of normal for books of this length (464 pgs). I had read reviews on Goodreads and some other sites, and while it read relatively quickly it certainly was not a light-hearted "summer read." The interesting element of the book was the interconnected plots, and how one action can ripple out with a number of unintended consequences. I won't spoil anything, but the book definitely improves the further along you are. While the writing styles are different, I would recommend The Son by Philipp Meyer as another sweeping family saga that crosses different generations. less
