review 1: unlike many of the haters, i found this book enjoyable & interesting, another perspective on the JT leroy scandal. i dug savannah's writing style; she has a unique take on things, an eye for strange interesting details and an ear for dialogue. (i've been telling everyone about how laura albert explained butt plugs to a clueless relative: "it's like a little christmas tree you put up your butt!") it was a little bit strange & non-linear but i think that's just how she is as a person.i would have liked to read more about the aftermath & what she's doing now.
review 2: I never read any of the JT Leroy books, but I was intrigued by how Laura Albert's literary hoax had so thoroughly duped the A list of "edgy" celebrities who had clamored for association with a perso... moren who didn't exist. This book is the memoir of Albert's niece, who played the public persona of JT Leroy. The story is bizarre, thrillingly gossipy, and the writing unpolished and earnest. Knoop's participation in the hoax, however, was the least interesting, given the picture she honestly and tenderly paints of the true author of JT's books, Laura Albert. less
