review 1: This is the story of the Comanches and Quanah Parker. Quanah is a Comanche born of a Comanche chief and a white woman, Cynthia Ann Parker who was taken by the Indians at the age of 9. When she is found by American soldiers she refuses to return to her relatives. (Her parents and siblings were killed in the attack.) Cynthia Ann is forced later to return after having 3 children, one is Quanah. He becomes a chief. As a young man, fights the white man and soldiers with brutal force. As he ages he helps his tribe to adjust to the reservation and the ways of the white man. The book has an incredible collection of facts told in an interesting way.
review 2: There's some decent history buried here but, my god, you have to wade through a thick sludge of ridiculou
... mores moral theorizing about the "savages," based apparently in a really silly theory that because the indigenous population of America apparently conceived of agriculture about 4000 years later than the indigenous people of Asia and the Middle East, the Americans natives were always 4000 years more primitive, culminating in a scene where the culture of Da Vinci meets the original savage on horseback. The author claims that the murder, torture and rape which were apparently not unusual practices if the Comanche, where incomprehensible to the European settler, apparently with blinders on so heavy he can ignore the standard practices of salve owners in Texas and elsewhere at the time this story takes place. Inexcusable. less

Excellent and complex view of the Comanches and the panhandle and the inevitable clash of cultures.
