review 1: 2.5 starsThis is a hard one to rate and review. I didn't like Jake too much, you learn to understand him, but he is not really likable. Don't really know what Darius saw in him. Sometimes, Jack was just downright mean. It makes sense after what he went through and how he handled it, but that didn't make me like him because of it. You know what happened to Jake, but we got nothing about Darius' past. His financial situation and rent problem is brought up, but you don't know how he got that way and what made him answer an ad for basically a maid. More would have been better. As for Marc, that just seemed thrown in there to just add another layer of drama. Nothing was explained and I was left frustrated without getting the answers to why it all happened in the first p... morelace.
review 2: Scarlet Blackwell really likes her tortured and troubled men, and I like them too, sometimes. I enjoyed this one even though I felt the ending was a bit abrupt. Jake is the tortured and troubled man in this story, traumatised by having been jilted at the altar by his former boyfriend Marc. Five years later Jake has still not come to terms with this break up and has turned the disappointment in on himself and lives the life of a recluse.ButJakes needs a handy man, cook and do-er of odd jobs around the home. Enter Darian who has financial difficulties and needs a job and is a fabulous cook. I really liked Darian, he was caring, compassionate and quickly fell in love with Jake.ButOf course Jake remains prickly, difficult, hard to reach, injured, unapproachable etc etc and should really be in therapy but then that would spoil the story.Anyway the story focuses on the turbulent and dramatic way these men come together, with ups and downs, and more ups and more downs, but of course eventually they get there.I do like classic Scarlet Blackwell. The men always seem so hurt, tortured, broken and without hope or with very dark backgrounds and slowly, slowly they crawl their way to the light and to new life. The best thing is that the reader has to make this journey with them. This story is very much like that, not angst filled, but a story which has real emotional lows and sadness, eventually evolving into some form of hope. Not the best SB book that I have read but still a good one. less

Not bad but thin characterisation and rushed plot hurt this story. Perhaps if it had been longer...

I expect better from Ms. Blackwell than this thinly plotted book.
