review 1: An interesting book about a time and place I knew very little. It was fascinating on two levels. One aspect was how individuals, some with relatively modest talent can seize opportunities that come out of the chaos of war. The second level was how nations demand the spoils of war and begin carving up the pie even before the pie is in the oven. I am not convinced that the Middle East vision of T. E. Lawrence would have been better and endured, however it may have been worth a chance to have a greater Arab voice in the region a century ago.
review 2: If you’re a military history buff . . . and you can admit that you actually enjoyed Peter O’Toole in the 1962 Best Picture “Lawrence of Arabia,” and you want to know why the Middle East is screwed up today
... more – then you’ll enjoy Scott Anderson’s “Lawrence in Arabia.” Well researched, and presenting little-known characters that played a significant role in the transformation of the region, my only complaint is that it bogs down at times with a minutia of details. Otherwise, a strong five-stars for a well written book. An eye-opener. less
