review 1: Eh. The premise of this novel had promise. A divorced man in his mid-thirties ends up working for a start-up tech company trying to create the world's first "intelligent computer" by passing the so-called Turing Test: fool judges that it is human 30% of the time. His father, who committed suicide, kept copious journals for most of his life, thus creating a foundation that spans most of a lifetime to feed to the computer to give him personality. He also gets involved with a pseudo-sexual, religious new age cultish organization, and dates a 20 year old member. Oh, and this cult also apparently firebombs sex shops because they believe that human touch is paramount to connections and thus sex toys are bad. Ugh. This would be fine, except, it's treated as a flippant plot point ... morethat should carry more weight and danger, but is glossed over. In fact, most of the plot threads and characters don't coalesce or are even addressed remotely enough to make this a complete novel. The novel is premised on some grand, heart-felt connection and reconcilation of the narrator to his somewhat distant, very Southern father (I think of Colonel Lingus from the SNL skits or that KFC Colonel Tom Hanks played, crossed with a wannabe William Faulkner) who's personality has ostensibly been transposed onto a computer. Again, this would be fine, if any of the actual expected and relevant catharsis were actually played out, none of it is. Couple this with interchangeable love interests whom I think, he just randomly chooses to be with, and this is an incomplete novel at best. There is a very funny moment where one of his girlfriends shows him an audition tape for Survivor. The awkwardness of that moment is worthy of The Comeback or Curb Your Enthusiasm. But the narrator's nonchalance at everything is frustrating, just as this had the potential to be a great novel.
review 2: This book had a lot of potential that, for me, was never fulfilled. I'm not normally a premise person, but this book had a premise that, treated differently, could have made for an amazing book. As it was, it felt like the author was determined to keep the reader at arm's length, never giving quite enough to get me attached to or caring about any of the characters. The ending began to turn this around, but it was too late to save the book for me. less

Interessant uitgangspunt, goed geschreven, maar net niet boeiend genoeg om 4 sterren te verdienen.
