review 1: These stories encapsulated the lifespan of each protagonist. I found them poignant, sympathetically written and quite thought provoking, being left with an increasing awareness of the transience of life. This was not in any way depressing so much as how it is. Faulks create believable characters, "warts and all" , all of whom display something of the goodness of the human spirit. Each story was set in different times and in some instances, different countries. The language used in each appropriate to the time and place.

... moreblurb on the back was completely misleading - I kept waiting for some clever link between the characters or stories (such as David Mitchell did brilliantly with Cloud Atlas and Ghostwritten) but it just never came and I was left with the feeling that I'd read 5 short stories which is fine if that's what you are expecting but I really wasn't. Wouldn't recommend this one I'm afraid. less
