review 1: The first inoculation you will need whilst reading this book is against the author himself. He is derisive, petty, and smug. While I agree with many of his conclusions, I cannot recommend this book. I really wish someone with nothing to gain would write a factual book on vaccinations. I think both sides are far too politicized and there is a lot of money at stake for people holding either viewpoint. This book lost a chance to make a difference by alienating the reader from the first page.
review 2: The Panic Virus tells the reader with a of how emotion and rhetoric is able to trump logic and evidence. Mnookin provides the reader with a full chronicle of the vaccine-autism controversy and its effects. He accurately depicts the sentiments of anti-vaccine parents
... morethrough emotional stories of how their children showed autism-spectrum signs shortly after receiving vaccines, and how these post hoc ergo propter hoc arguments were disseminated by unreliable scientists and duplicitous media. The additional information Mnookin includes in The Panic Virus, such as a history of opposition to vaccines ranging from smallpox inoculations in the Revolutionary Era to opposition to adverse affects of Salk’s polio vaccine and biological fallacies, further explain the fervent-yet-unsound arguments of the anti-vaccine community. This is a great book for people interested in the field of medicine (specifically virology or pediatrics), autism, the field of public health, or parents who would like to make an informed decision regarding vaccinations. less
