review 1: One of those books that I want to like but I just can’t get into. Perhaps the book has the misfortune of being the first one I read after Frederica by Georgette Heyer. Ms. Heyer’s novels are rich with historical detail and the conversations fit the period very well. Ms. Galen gets many of the historical details right, but the story and the dialogue, particularly the dialogue, feels like a modern story plopped in historical time. When I read a historical romance, I really want to get pulled into the period and this isn’t doing it for me. And there’s too much driving me crazy about the spy plot. I give up.
review 2: This book was very good. I loved the french language and the history behind it. I liked the realistic way that Sarah acted in response
... moreto the job that was thrust upon her. I like how she grew as a character. As for Julien, I liked that he grew as well. I loved how determined he was to never give up on his family. The only two set backs were that I didn't really feel the love between Sarah and Julien all that much. It was like first they were indifferent and awkward and lustful for each other. And then the next minute they were loving each other. Also, some of the epiphanies that were "discovered" at the end of the book were pretty predictable at the beginning. The book was very mysterious though and it made me want to read the next:) less
