review 1: Telepathy, Psy-stuff, Suspense, Mafia, Love, Friendship, killers and weird relationships...And here I am, confused, not knowing who is my favorite character anymore.Okay so the story starts with a call from Bruno to Aaro. Bruno asks Aaro to help Nina, a friend of his soon-to-be-wife and Aaro brutally refuses. He still refuses even when Nina calls him herself. Tough guy who wants to stay out of trouble and out of the McClouds business. And he's right! especially after having his house, van and car (if I recall well) blown up before - put aside that he said no because he had a family emergency.Anyway, as we all know, Aaro will end up helping Nina and getting into trouble together. And we will see the tough guy getting soft and how his "NO" will turn into "MARRY ME" after les... mores than 3 days. Apparently, all it takes to get the words out of his mouth was to get shot at. Oh well just kidding. He had to be tied up, put in a trunk and saved by a woman while being scolded at all the time. Nice.. isn't it? :))I enjoyed this reading. It was nice, smooth, VERY hot and different from the other books. For one, the McCloud clan was absent and by clan I mean all of them including Tam, Nick and Seth. Even if some of them were mentioned at some point. Miles was the only one who we felt present (except Bruno, of course). However, I missed those scenes where men handle things. Don't get me wrong, I liked this book as much as the others and I appreciated the romance in here, the bound between Aaro and Nina is in a way authentic and special. They shared moments together, appreciated them and needed them especially with the life they had.It is true that "men handling stuff" is not here but we have "Miles-Aaro-Nina handling". Nina is involved and she does her part extremely well. She's the one who saved Aaro when Dimitri and Roy caught them and she was the one to figure out where the B-dose is hidden.I loved Aaro when he appeared before (book5, book7 and book8) and I loved him even more now since you know, when you get into a person's head and get to know him, you become more attached. And this is the case with McKenna's books. When you get to know the characters, you can't help it, you fall instantly in love and it keeps getting better. In this book, we see that Miles had moved away and I understand his reasons. However, Miles seemed closer to Aaro than the McClouds. I always considered Miles a part of the family, more than Cindy was. Besides, Cindy ran with that rockstar, so we are done with her right? We'll see in book 10 I guess.Aaro's story did indeed end here but the villains were not all stopped yet and Lara is still somewhere we ignore. I can't believe the book ended with Miles in coma and Lara not found! But since Book 9 is finally read. Book 10 here I come.
review 2: This book was free from Library Thing to read and review. This was the first book by Shannon McKenna that I have read. I am not quite sure whether I liked this book or not. The mind control/mad scientist premise that underlies the whole plot was a bit difficult to get into. However, the author has done an excellent job of producing a fast paced novel that grabs the reader's interest from the get-go. Alex Aaro jumps into an adventure when a friend enlists his assistance with a social worker who is hospitalized because is injected with some mysterious substance by a woman babbling in a foreign language. Not only is he tied up with this woman who guards a secret that a telepathic, mind controlling group who would like to keep the drug and its power secret, but he has is usual familial intrusions/problems. The story moves along fairly quickly, as I said, definitely engaging the reader. However, I think I may have understood and followed storyline better had I read other books in the series. In addition to the fast action and this crazy group who are chasing after this social worker to keep her from spewing their secret, Alex and this woman are drawn to each other, and there is some great chemistry between them. This definitely was a different sort of book from those I normally read, but it was interesting and fast paced. less
