review 1: I really liked this book; wanted to give it a 3.5 stars, if only because it's definitely written with a feminine sensibility. This is neither a complaint nor a compliment, just an observation from a guy. I knew this going into it, so it wasn't a huge distraction, but Shauna writes about some topics that are generally foreign to a single guy. Even still, I appreciate her approach and her humor, and I always like the combination of recipes and stories. I'll be sharing this with other faith/food readers that I know. It would make an excellent gift. (Full disclosure: I actually bought this as a "back-up" Christmas gift for my cousin. Turns out that she didn't need it, as my original gift for her worked great, so I got to read it. Score!)
review 2: I really enjoyed ... morethis book - The author's style is descriptive and intimate, and she shares openly, like a friend. I was expecting something different, perhaps. I love cookbooks with personal stories for each recipe, a la David Lebovitz, and I felt more like I was reading a blog or a journal. However, I am inspired to start a dinner party group and appreciated her retelling of the memorable times she had with her close friends around her table. Ultimately, reading this book has motivated me to write my collection of family recipes and stories. Also, I also connected with her struggle to accept herself as someone with a big appetite who loves to eat - I think a lot of readers will relate! less
