Well, I always say that when there is a major death in the first 3 chapters….you better buckle in.
And I have to say, it was a death I was not particularly fond of, either. It felt like an unopened chapter went flying into a fireplace, never to be read.
My mind instantly started to create an alternate ending/beginning for these characters.
The writer has a vision, it’s very clear, but she really needs to take a few moments with a thesaurus. Make it more interesting. Take it to another level. Find her own voice.
When I play it out in my head like a movie, the thespians that play, are not ones of great fame. Rather they are B grade, CW tv show actors, during season one, before they got over the awkward stage.
Then a huge plot twist! He-llo!
An almost death, and almost love scene, an almost ending. Then a real death, a kidnapping, and an alliance….all in the first five chapters. I need more coffee.
It’s the part in the book that is so good you don’t want to give it up, but you need to give your brain time to adjust and catch up. Take a breather, maybe a nap.
It’s the part where I’m trying to figure out the plot, so I kind of do some googling, kind of scan the last few pages of the book to see which characters make it to the end (all the while, trying not to read dialogue).
Over all, I am definitely going to keep reading, and I am sure the next installment of Reader’s Rants will be coming soon! (Yes, I just came up with the series name…and yes, I read fast.)
