review 1: A very painful and deadly virus wiped out most of the population before anything was developed to save everyone. A suppressant was found by Waverly via a time portal under Lake Tahoe that took him exactly two years in the future. Fortunately the portal returns the person to their own time line. Waverly gave the found drug to Stead who developed the cure that saved everyone, with one problem -- that a dose must be administered every day to keep the virus from returning. To ensure the daily dosing and help everyone, the survivors were moved to one city per state, evenly distributed, and a wall went up around the cities for protection. To make sure crime stays low to non-existent, the time portal is used to find out about future crimes so they may arrest the offenders before... more they could do any harm. The Waverly-Stead Company is quite powerful in this world. The story takes place mainly in Reno, which is one of the most important cities now. It's 16 years after the devastating virus and Bad Times that proceeded the outbreak. The main characters are siblings West and Clover Donovan, and Mango the helper dog, because Clover has autism. The book is a fast read since it's nearly all dialog. It's definitely geared towards teens, young adult. An autistic main character was a great decision on Grimes part. It adds dimension and something new in the post-apocalyptic/dystopian young-adult genre. A warning...the book ends okay, but there aren't any real solid resolutions. This is only the beginning of a series and you will definitely want to read the next one.
review 2: Not the usual Dystopian novel, with an autistic girl as the main character. This adds a complexity to the story of a bunch of teens basically rebelling against an authoritarian society. This is the first in the series and ends rather abruptly; I'm rather over waiting to get my hands on the next in the series - it seems half the books I read nowadays just keep going on .... and on ... and on. This one is a promising start though. less
