review 1: I picked this book up figuring it would be a stereotypical teen fantasy. It turned out for be a wonderfully told story about a young teenager holding her family together. Yes, there was the fantasy portion with the mermaids, but I simply loved this authors writing style. Adrianne is 14 years old, the daughter of the village seamstress, helping to support her family after her father's death. Her father worked in the stables and often took Adrianne to help with the horses. After his death, the family went from being one with status to living in poverty. I am not quite sure where this book takes place, but I got the feel of England a couple hundred years ago. Nevertheless, the village where Adrianne lived was on an island with the legend of a mermaid that took Lady Lau... moreretta to her death over a hundred years ago.Adrianne lives with her younger sister, Cecily, her mother, and her miserable Auntie Minnah. Cecily is the favored child, and Auntie Minnah is downright horrible to Adrianne, which makes Cecily selfish, although, I did not find her to be a terrible person. The mother was a wake character, relying on Adrianne and Minnah to take care of things. They struggle to make enough money to pay the taxes and put food on the table. In the village the children tease Adrianne for her misfortunes, all except her best friend, Denn Young. It's apparent in the book that Adrianne has feelings for Denn that are more than friendship. She feels she does not stand a chance for she thinks he is interested in the local beauty, Cora Lynn, who is a spoiled, selfish brat. Early on Adrianne saves Cecily from a mermaid that was trying to drown her. The mermaid scratches Adrianne and things begin to change. She hears the mermaid calling her to the sea. An encounter with a fortune teller leaves Adrianne wondering if she is cursed like the legendary Lady Lauretta. The book follows Adrianne through her life as a poor village girl, this the troubles of many young teenagers. The mermaid is throughout the story, but kept nicely at a distant, and not overwhelming with fantasy. Adrianne was a strong character that I respected. I loved this book.
review 2: It's been a while since a book has captured my attention like the book, Forbidden Sea. With five children, my own business and a lovely part-time job as a librarian, free time is rare. Once I began reading this book though, I took every moment I could to read it. Carrying it with me in my purse, on the slight, chance I'd have time to read it. That rarely happens with me. The author held my attention from the first moment I first opened it's pages. I was also very impressed with the morals taught in the book. This is one I want all my daughters to read. (my oldest daughter has read this book, and loved it!) It teaches us that we all have value, no matter what others may think of us. This is something we all could use! This book is a treasure, and one I recommend to all my friends! less
