review 1: Fourteen-year-old Adrianne is tempted to leave her village and her family's reduced circumstances when a mermaid lures her into the sea. Teen readers will enjoy the description of the undersea kingdom and Adrianne's love for childhood friend Denn and identify with her wish to have a better life. There's quite a lot going on in this story which was inspired by the classic "The Little Mermaid." I have to wonder why she wasn't able to use her skills with horses earlier and how her mother could have remained so helpless throughout all these events, though. No girl should have to put up with all that she did. Although there weren't a lot of surprises here, I enjoyed reading the story and rooting for Adrianne. How hard it must have been to live with such superstitious folks as l... moreived on her island! The poor girl couldn't do anything without casting suspicion on her.
review 2: I really liked the story. It could have been really formulaic but there was something about the main character that made her more detailed and believable than in similar stories. I was a little confused about the target audience: in my library it was classified as JF but the protagonist was 14 and it seemed definitely YA to me, though it was "wholesome" enough for children perhaps I thought the story was mature enough to interest older readers and maybe it's too bad if adult or Young Adult Fiction has to have PG-13 or R rated elements to be considered mature.I went looking for a sequel and was a little disappointed that even though this came out in 2010 there hasn't been anything new by the author. less
