review 1: A page turner for me. Lydia is a slave that longs for freedom, she works in the big house and has a room there so she has much better living and working conditions than her family and the field slaves. Her best friend is Lizzy, the master's daughter. The young women are the same age and grew up together. The master allows this relationship as long as Lydia knows her place and serves his family. Lydia is very light skinned and doesn't have 'colored' hair. Through several circumstances and deceit Lydia ends up at a neighboring plantation living the life of a white woman and is planning her wedding to the owner of the plantation although she is in love with John another slave. The author keeps the reader engaged while writing about wanting things so bad Lydia is willing to se... morell her soul, but finds what she really wanted all along. I'm a 'detail' reader and there were times that the story line didn't add up as far as time frame, weather and other details. Sometimes it also seemed to skip around and I'd have to stop and think things through to figure out who the author was writing about. If the details had been more accurate I would have given it a five.
review 2: This had a very interesting perspective, perhaps one not usually encountered. The plot had just enough trouble and novelty to be engaging, but many characters lacked some depth. The most captivating characters were found in the background, while the foreground was dominated by a run-of-the-mill racist antagonist, and a protagonist who is stubborn and independent (like many fictional heroines) but leaves you wishing she'd bared more of her soul. Overall it was a good story, however. less

Wasn't what I wanted/ expected Don't judge a book by its cover... Kindle edition or not!
