review 1: This book is the first in a new series by Shelley Shepard Gray. Some of the characters have appeared in her "Seasons of Sugarcreek" series. It was like hearing updates and catching up with old friends. This book focuses on Miriam Zehr. She has had a crush on Junior Beiler for many years. He has never noticed her before but he suddenly approaches her. She is ecstatic but soon realizes that he wants her help courting her best friend Mary Kate Hershberger. Miriam is devastated but she is so kind that she agrees to help Junior even though her heart is breaking. Mary Kate, the pretty schoolteacher, has issues and secrets of her own. I liked that the situations seem real and not contrived. The relationships were realistic and had both ups and downs. I was pleased with the ending... more and can't wait for the next in the series. I can't decide which of the characters that I would like Shelley to focus on in the next book. I'm part of Shelley's group "The Buggy Bunch."
review 2: When a book can make me laugh, cry, love, hope, and appreciate values, then it has done its job. Hopeful by Shelley Shepard Gray has all the qualities that a book needs to keep you reading for more. The hope and faith you see throughout these pages makes you just feel good. Miriam is hopeful in so many ways and shares her love with everyone. The way she steps up to help Kay and also Mary Kate during their times of trouble shows what a true person Miriam is. This book was very hard to put down when it was time to fix dinner. A book full of HOPE! A definite must read! less
