review 1: This is an easy read. It's well-written and brings to life characters that are already interesting but maybe don't feel as real as they could! Unfortunately, I love historical fiction, and this is more of a novel, so the ratio of fact to fiction is too heavy on the fiction for me. That said, I LOVED all the references to real paintings and locations... Vincent Van Gogh as a person is now alive in head. I enjoyed it.
review 2: I was completely engrossed in this fictional account of the final two years of Van Gogh's life. The author takes a small sampling of his final letters (in which a prostitute named Rachel is mentioned), and wanted to know exactly who she was. She did not find much in her research, but based on his history, and what IS known about his ... morefinal two years, constructed this tale from Rachel's point of view. She (author) included as many known/historical/factual details as possible during this time. A fascinating read. less
