review 1: I was asked to read this for a project at work. The book has a difficult storyline centering on child abduction, pedophiles, and drug use. I thought the characters seemed shallow and I wanted a resolution to Caleb's struggles and recovery. The reappearance of his abductor/abuser in his life was extremely disturbing. I gave the novel two stars because the writing is good, but the character development is poor. None of the characters are likeable.
review 2: A kidnapping and its aftermath: 14-year-old Caleb and little sister Lark follow their mother to a bird sanctuary and disintegrating hotel in Costa Rica to escape the media attention caused by Caleb's rescue after a three-year disappearance in "the Gone," in a pedophile's custody. Caleb is a different boy
... more when he returns to his family, and everyone has to make adjustments. Land reclamation, life rebuilding; animal imprinting, Caleb's connection to his rescuer/caretaker Jolly. Ghosts of dead children haunt Caleb: Melia, Zander. Luis, a changeling transvestite boy (travesty), casts a spell to help Caleb forget. less
