review 1: Some parts of this book deserve a five star rating and other parts a two star rating, so I just gave it a three. It's a sometimes fascinating and sometimes tedious history of the Chelsea Hotel and the characters who inhabited it over the years:"A place where even the cockroaches have teeth"--was one memorable line...If you like to read about artists and writers and their dissolute lives-this may be the book for you. Overall a fun read as long as you are willing to skim a bit.
review 2: A very good book. Sherill Tippins uses the history of the Chelsea Hotel as a link for connecting more than 100 years of cultural and economic history. The center is New York, but there are links both to the USA in general and to Europe, especially London and expats in Paris. In a
... more way this book reminds me of Bill Bryson - not because the books are written in the same style, but because Tippins' book just as some of the best of Bryson's uses a place (and/or a time) and shows many of the links and connected developments. And after reading (both finished and in the state of reading) some individual biographic books such as Bob Dylan's Chronicles Vol. 1, Suzy Rotolo's A Freewheelin' Time, Patty Smith Just Kids and more, this books sort of brings it all together as well as links it with formewr times and more recent events. less

Wanted to like it, bit found the writing style dreary and did not have the engagement to finish it.

Dude, I do NOT know why I stubbornly read on when I could have just stopped at any moment. UGH.

Fascinating story of a building and its occupants. Does get a bit bogged down in places.

It gets too bogged down in "facts". Some are correct. Some aren't.
