Sarah Woolson
review 1: Glad to pick up another Sarah Woolson mystery, they seem to be very staggered in their release dates. This one was reasonable challenging from the mystery standpoint, mainly due to the Quentin Tarantino like body count. THe parts of the story that have been consistently good in the past continue to be, the relationships between the characters, particularly Sarah and her brother Samuel and her friend Robert. THe thwarted romance between her and RObert is getting a bit tedious, more like a bad joke than anything. I did miss the San Francisco history however, which has featured so prominently in previous books, it was thinner in this edition and I really missed it. That unique setting and fascinating combination of high class and seedy underbelly really made some of the previ... moreous installments and without it Telegraph Hill fell a little flat.
review 2: Good view of early San Francisco, not so good writing (adverbs and way too much use of physical description to convey emotion) that gets in the way of an excellent plot. The characters don't progress very much; it's a very static world in which the only exit is death or marriage, and I'm not sure which is worse for the characters. I found the pace much too slow, though the basic plot is fine; it was a struggle getting through the middle of the book. less

DNF--did not finish. The pace was too slow and the characters not as deeply developed as I like.

This was the second Shirley Tallman book I've read in this series and I really enjoyed it.

A bit slow in places, but a solid mystery with a delightful cast of characters.

The mystery was satisfying; the writing was stilted.
