review 1: This is interesting on many levels. Shohreh Aghdashloo was born in Tehran, Iran, in 1952. When she was a teenager in the late sixties, Tehran was known as "The Paris of The Middle East" due to its devotion to the arts, fashion and dining. But as the years went by, all of that changed. People gradually lost faith in the ruling party and the Shah, and in late 1978 revolution swept the land. The Shah was ousted, replaced by the Ayatollah Khomeini and the new Islamic Republic. Terrified by the changes this entailed, particularly in women's rights, Ms. Aghdashloo fled the country. Her riveting account of her life following this flight cannot help but make you wonder: is freedom sweeter when you have always known it, or when you experience it only after trial and tribulation? Sh... moreohreh Aghdashloo won an Emmy for Supporting Actress in HBO's House of Saddam, and was the only Iranian to ever be nominated for an Oscar.
review 2: This slim volume by the Iranian actress with an unpronouncable (to me, at least) name takes one through a life still young but marked by considerable accomplishments. She was born to wealth and privilege in Iran. The revolution that ended the Shah's rule and ushered in a religious dictatorship forced her into exile. To Shohreh's credit, she coped with her reduced financial situation and her interrupted marriage by emigrating to England, learning the language and earning a bachelor's degree. She is an accomplished actress and one can certainly not hold it against her that she was born beautiful as well. The lady has a lot of grit and deserves continued success in her chosen profession. less
