review 1: I loved Riley's narration--while some elements of her character fall into YA-trope-land (smoking! "pleasantly plump"! reading classic novels!), she does have a great personality. And I appreciate the overall message of the book, that religion doesn't necessarily determine who's "good" or not, and it's up to everyone to determine what they personally believe in. But (and this is something I've noticed with a lot of Australian authors) the pacing was really weird--sometimes it was so fast I couldn't even follow what was going on, and sometimes it dragged a LOT. ... morever quite seemed to decide what sort of story it wanted to be. It looked as if it was aiming for fat-acceptance, but wasn't, hovered around earnest-Christians-are-dopes territory but didn't quite fit there OR in the opposite camp (sorry), where protag learns her cynicism is misplaced - was it a story about grief, about acceptance, a romance? Was it cautionary tale about dangers of substance abuse (it scared ME as a parent) or trying for cooler, worrying parents are stupid note? Never seemed quite any of these, and for me, at least, it didn't manage a happily bit-of-many-genres mix either. less
