review 1: I really enjoyed this book on the one hand because I learned a lot. On the other hand, I'm much more conscious of fonts now and they have started to bug me! I've unconsciously been using Helvetica for ages but maybe it is time for a change. My only beef with the book is that I would have liked more big examples of the individual parts of letters and how they change from font to font. Some of the terminology was a little much. A good book though!
review 2: Es un título que definitivamente todo tipómano tiene que leer. Lo hace único el hecho de que no es un simple diccionario tipográfico ni un libro de texto informativo. Trata del impacto que pueden llegar a tener las fuentes tipográficas en la sociedad, por ejemplo, el éxito que pueden a llegar a tener en ... moreuna campaña política o incluso provocar una gran aversión como lo ha causado Comic Sans. Así como, de la historia de la tipografía y sus grandes representantes, tanto de años atrás como contemporáneos, todo con un toque de humor, que hacen a la lectura muy amena; además de que todo está basado en una extensa investigación por parte del autor, la cual incluye varias referencias que a la par de la lectura resultan muy entretenidas, como el documental de Helvetica, videos de YouTube, foros y discusiones en internet, etc. Recomendado a todos aquellos metidos en el ámbito del diseño de la comunicación gráfica y a cualquiera que se incomode por la Papyrus en los menús de restaurantes, o que más de una vez se ha quedado a nada de estrellarse contra algo en la calle por ir admirando la tipografía en los rótulos. less

The information in this book is fantastic, it's just unfortunate that it's presented in a haphazard order, and without a lot of narrative structure.If you've ever wondered what the difference is between Palatino and Times New Roman, this is an incredibly good read. Who knew that Gill Sans came from shady character Eric Gill? Or that there was a font so precious to its creator that he literally threw it in the river so it wouldn't make it into the hands of a competitor?I wish Garfield had taken more time to explain some of the graphic design terms in the book (perhaps a glossary?) and really told a story, rather than coming up with some nifty anecdotes and leaving it at that.
