review 1: As is often true when books delve deep into the past (and farther from reliable source material), Garfield's book starts a bit slowly and gain momentum as we get closer to the more documented, verifiable and tangible present. (That's a terribly long sentence.) If you enjoy geeky books like Garfield's "Just My Type," you will enjoy this history of maps; especially as map-making and reading has taken such a drastic turn in the era of Mapquest/Google/iPhone. Garfield is not anti-app (nor I am), but there is much useful remaining about folding maps and the full atlas. The subject might seem dry, but Garfield is an incredibly witty writer and story-teller. I do not have the book in hand and thus cannot quote an example. Just read it.
review 2: An interesting and oft
... moreen fascinating series of short chapters and anecdotes about maps. I was particularly interested in the essay on computer gaming and maps, with its special emphasis on GTA and on Elder Scrolls, particularly Skyrim. A chapter on map dealers was also particularly interesting to me because of my line of work, as was an essay on the Vinland map, which included a useful primer on map forgeries. This is not a history of cartography and the lack of an over-riding theme (other than “interesting tidbits about maps”) lessened its value for me, but if you like maps, you’ll enjoy it. less
