review 1: Not only a great book but a beautiful one. Great illustrations, painting and photos. The book is a broad history of England from about 400 until present day. It specifically leaves the history of Scotland, Ireland and the Welsh out and focusing all the books attention on English history. As one would expect the most interesting section is the front two thirds. It gives the reader great insight into England's history without getting bogged down. It goes just deep enough to cover the country's history and gives the reader the tools to explore any specific event in greater detail on their own.
review 2: This book was a concise history of the roughly 1500 years it took to create the modern United Kingdom we know and love today. Suffice it to say I learned a l... moreot, but the writing was a bit dry and almost could have been written in list form, just detailing the various monarchs, places, enemies, and political figures. I was sort of under the impression that this was going to be a history book in the more zippy narrative style that is popular today with history books. They read more like bizarre novels then dry nonfiction. That being said, that was my own misconception, so on this book's own merits, I'd say it was good. You learn about all the nuts and wackos that populated the landscape of English history (not to mention where some words like jingoism, cabal, and barebones come from). If you already have that Anglophile spirit, you'll appreciate this read, and if not, it's just a nice way to understand the development of the Western world from a non-American POV. less
