review 1: The character development of Anna, the protagonist, is stunning. After finishing the book I desperately want to see her perform live, buy her albums, and sneak backstage to meet her. It's always nice to see a female character who isn't perfect, but her flaws don't consume her, human. I also liked the flashback structure of the chapters. Anna never knows what's coming next and it worked out nicely that the reader didn't either.
review 2: This was an interesting look at a touring musician, an older indy rock star named Anna, who is making (or not making) her comeback. Part of what made it interesting is that she would have been famous when I was in high school or college, so this comeback tour might have been something I would go see. I also enjoyed reading about
... more how a band tours and records, because it's a subject I know very little about. The main character's father was a sculptor of sorts, famous also, and she recounts much of his work and life, although her ability to reflect on her own life and the effect he had on it struck me as limited somehow, given all the space it gets in the novel. Anna comes across as an interesting character, but depressed, and that depression is ultimately what held me back from really enjoying the novel. less
