review 1: An impressive novel that tells the tale of a largely forgotten Egyptian Queen. I found Hatshepsut to be a very well-written and intriguing character that was so vivid and vibrant that she easily jumped from the page and came to life. I knew nothing about Hatshepsut prior to this novel and now not only have I learnt a lot but I have also found myself with a new era of history to become absorbed in through research and further reading. Ms Thornton has definitely inspired this through her brilliantly written account of Egypt during this era of a female Pharaoh. I believe Hatshepsut would be proud to know that her name has lived on and that she became known as a successful female Pharaoh.
review 2: I'm afraid my expectations for this were too high. It was an easy
... moreand somewhat entertaining read (otherwise I wouldn't have finished) but something was just off for me. There are people in ancient history that need to be written carefully and lyrically, and I feel that Hatshepsut deserves to be one of those. I felt like she was written almost haphazardly, and the prose was far from lyrical. To me, it just seemed like a very glossy, superficial account. less
