review 1: I received this book from Goodreads in exchange for a review.Former Army Ranger, turned MC protector, Christian Cage Owens rides with the Viper MC. But Cage had struck out on his own, determined to take down a rival MC. The Heathens MC is run by his Father, a man who Cage escaped from when he was little more that a boy. Now his Father wants nothing more that to see Cage dead, clearing the path cleared so they can sell their drugs in the small New York town of Skulls Creek. The last confrontation left Cage clinging to life.Calla has enough on her mind when her bosses’ phone rings. She is being stalked by someone from her past, someone determined to destroy her. So when she answers Bernie’s phone, she is not at her best. And she doesn’t expect to hear the voice of a ... moredying man on the other end of the line…a man she immediately connects with. Cage is calling to warn his friend, but in the few minutes that he and Calla talked, a bond was formed, a connection so strong that it gave Cage a reason to live. When she delivers the cryptic message to her boss, he tells her to run. And she does. She takes the car her boss had bought for just this sort of emergency and she follows directions that were pre-programmed into the car’s GPS. Her first stop is with Tenn, an ex-Army buddy of Bernie’s. As soon as Tenn figures out who Calla is and who sent her, he takes her under his wing. For weeks she mourns the death of the unknown man on the other end of the phone. It isn’t until Cage arrives to take her to Skull Creek and the protection of himself and the other MC members, that she discovers he is still alive. Sexy, protective, and possessive Cage wants nothing more than to throw Calla over his shoulders and carry her to safety. From the start, the sparks sizzle between Cage and Calla. But living within a MC has its own set of rules along with a very dangerous lifestyle. Can Calla accept this world and Cages protection? Cage is determined to protect her at all cost. But he wants more that to protect her, he wants Calla in his bed. He enlists the aid of a few other members of the MC to find whoever is stalking her. He is also working with Preach, the head of the Vipers, to putting an end once and for all to the attempts of the Heathens to take over the town. The book deals with tension, both emotional and sexual, as Calla and Cage find a way to shed their own shattered past and learn open up and trust each other.
review 2: Tyler's kick off to the Skulls Creek series features well-developed characters, good dialogue, and some excellent tension . . . oh and some really sexy moments. I was completely hooked from the beginning because Tyler's opening chapter was absolutely riveting. You simply can't look away. Cage and Calla both have a great about of depth, and they have great chemistry, which you feel from the beginning. Though some other reviewers find Calla and Cage's telephone conversation chemistry to be suspect, I would say their conversation and ability to connect makes sense even if you have to potentially suspend some disbelief. (Maybe you just have to believe a bit in fate and the ability to make instant connections, which is something I absolutely believe in.) I appreciated Tyler's ability to tell a thoughtful and intriguing story. I must say that I would have like the the motivations and paths of the "bad guys" to have been a bit more fleshed out because it would have solidified certain plot pieces. Viper's Run is a great start to the series, as it told an excellent story but also set up so many other people and plots to follow. I can't wait to read more of this series, and it was great to get the nod to the Havoc series via Tyler's alter-ego SE Jakes--I'm looking forward to some potential cross-overs . . . Tenn, please??? I can highly recommend this book. As a final note, I'll offer a trigger warning, but I'll also say that the issues are dealt with well and thoughtfully. less
