review 1: A very easy read about the life of Roald Amundsen. I didn't really know much about Amundsen before reading this biography, apart from his race to the pole with Scott, so I didn't really know what to expect. It came as a big shock to see how Amundsen's achievements were brushed under the carpet, especially here in the UK (something I can attest to, as only in the last few years did I realise that Amundsen not only got to the pole first, but got everyone back safely). The book doesn't just focus on his most famous voyage to the South Pole, but gives a good overview of his life, and covers all his other adventures, but without overloading the reader with too much detail. The author has done his homework and researched all possible avenues, so a big thumbs up fro... morem me.
review 2: This book is ok. It seems at once superficial and too long. The book would be much better if the author wrote in more detail and let Amundsen's words and actions speak for themselves. Bown spends most of the book, it seems, trying to apologize for, explain, and aggrandize his subject and comes off as a bit of a sycophant. Actually, on reflection, the book really isn't ok. It felt like work to finish and I was almost constantly annoyed by the writing. The title and the cover photo are sweet, though. less
