review 1: This is about as high as I can rate writing about the experience of loving music - something so personal, it's hard to do well, but Almond does an amazing job. I got this book after hearing Steve Almond interviewed on Marc Maron and it hits every point of being a musical obsessive - the loneliness, the idealism, the selfishness of it all. I loved every page of this book, and would probably read it again - which I never do. This book made me a Steve Almond fan as well. Devour this.
review 2: It started out strong in the first few chapters as Almond laid the groundwork for what I thought would be a very fun read. I could identify with a lot of what he expressed and he was extremely witty. Then it spiraled down to near boredom as the book became mostly about h
... moreim and his love of obscure musicians/bands. Not to say that the music he likes doesn't have artistic merit, obscurity doesn't equate to irrelevance necessarily. Hell, I love plenty of obscure stuff. But I learned a long time ago that most music fanatics don't really care to hear about the obscure stuff I like, they're too busy waiting to tell me about the obscure stuff they like. And that's how I felt for most of this book. I didn't particularly care about what obscure stuff he liked and his stories that went along with it. less
