review 1: As with other dog books that I have read, I thought the author was a bit self serving, but that's OK. While he made the dog the story, I thought the real story was the innate ability of his dog to learn combined with Steve Duno's innate ability to bond with and teach dogs. I don't think Leo would have come off as well if he had been MY dog. But, as you read along, you gets glimpses of Steve Duno doing a lot of training with the dog. It was his first dog so, for Steve, there will probably never be another dog like him. I think maybe all dog owners have at least one dog they feel that way about.Leo, the dog "on the hill" was only 6 months old when Steve picked him up on a road side in Mendocino, CA. Steve had never had a dog. This is the story of their life together and the ... morebond between them. You know the end when you start. That choice that all of us with pets have to make one day. But what is important is the life that he led. Seeing the dog through Steve's eyes was enlightening because he was able to put more meaning into the dog's actions than I have ever thought to see in my own dog. An enjoyable book, a fantastic dog, a fantastic owner.
review 2: At first I thought that this book was kind of slow because they couldn't decide if they wanted a dog or not but when they finally decided to adopt him the book became very interesting I thought that this was a very good book which of course ends with a sad ending and this book had a sad ending but I thought that they did a good thing to put it out of its misery because it couldn't walk and was in pain. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes dogs and I personally like to read books about dogs. :) less
