review 1: Casey (daughter of children's author Jon Scieszka) and boyfriend Steven met in Morocco just before their senior year of college. The two managed to stay in touch and decided to travel together after graduation. They taught English in China, vacationed in south Asia, revisited Morocco, and studied and worked in Mali. This book was fascinating and fun! The illustrations throughout added a lot to the story and gave a more complete sense of place. I loved hearing about the food, culture, and people throughout their travels. While this is sold as a young adult book, I would definitely recommend it to any adult who enjoys tales of travel.
review 2: Too cute college graduates fall in love and travel the world. She writes, he illustrates. I thought they were going to b
... moree fantastically annoying, but gotta admit, they're not bad company. I read it for their account of China early on, but they keep moving. Their attempts to navigate understanding other cultures among members of those cultures who are not interested in being understood are, well, instructive. One heartbreaking part happened when Casey has been under the weather for a while, and Steven tells her, while they are thousands of miles from home, that she's not fun anymore. It sounds like they stayed together and started a non-profit, and gosh, they're both optimistic, but the liberation from home carries some burdens, too. less
