review 1: When I started to read this book, I had no idea that f all things it would delve into the subject of domestic violence.I was very ready for a story of a charming asshole falling in love with his conquest, a trope I happen to love, but Final Admission did not go to that direction at all. I'm usually exited when ana author manages to surprise me by either the tone they use or the plot twist and originally that was the case here. Unfortunately, I could no t rid myself of the feeling that the twist part was too intentional here. James Trenchard has a reputation of being a womanizing prick and that is very much emphasized until the sudden revelation of his marriage and the fact that he indeed doesn't fuck around. I found that weird, especially, as later on someone admired what ... morea great couple James and his hubby were. Seriously, people don't know he's married? And I had a hard time believing that one jealous gyu could create so many rumours out of thin air. Anyways, I tried to ignore my thoughts on that subject once we got to the domestic violence part. And, I must say, the author did a good job. There are tons and tons of book about abused people who outright hate their partners, but in this case, there was the aknowldgement how difficult it is to stop loving someone, no matter how horrible they are. Howevere, I thought Ms. Brown only got halfway to a great depiction of the situation, because she neglected something most writers do, which is the charm of the people who and up being violent. True, there are thouse brutes that practically have a neon sign declaring them to be bullies and abusers, but most do not. I guess ot it simpler to brand all people who hit their partners as utter mosnters, but that, to me, gives an incorrect picture of the situation and makes it that much harder for a reader to relate to the situation the abused person lives in. To someone looking at it from the outside, they only see the bad and just how destructive relationships like those are, but the people who live in them, see the good as well. I mean. there is a reason they fell in love with the abuser int he first place. But, this is a difficult subject and I imagine there is a greta temptation to void the violent husband of all good personality traits. What actually ended up being the biggest problem for me ended up being the pacing, which I felt was strange and broke the flow of the story. Also, bringing up Ethan fucking around happily in the six months while waiting for James seemed redundand. It didn't bother me, strangely enough, just that it contributed nothing to the story.Ultimately I went with three stars, though I confess I didn't much enjoy the book. The extra star is for the effort the author obviously put in it. The characters were sufficiently different from the usual and all in all the book was well written.
review 2: 3-3.5*Ok let´s start with to positive: I read the book nearly in one sitting-so it held my interest. Overall the storyline was good-don´t think I read about domestic abuse, (currently happening to one of the MC´s not in the past) before. There was some fun in the story which made me smile. And I liked the characters per se.So what bothered me:James was beaten up on a regular basis by his husband and Ethan tried to get him away from it. The problem I had was the inconsistency Ethan´s character showed-there for James....offering him all...gone in the next second because why should he deal with the problems James had, since he won´t leave his husband. I can understand the frustration, but first sex and the next time they meet he can´t deal with it anymore. What happened in the mean time? If the story between the mood swings would have been deeper or more flashed out it would have done wonders, I think. So I just didn´t get him: he helped James and knew what was happenig to him. But not once did he ask James why he stayed, he just condemned him and was frustrated as James didn´t do what Ethan wanted. And to top it all he was angry at James´family/friends for watching and not helping him and what did he do? Did he get James the help he needed? If it would be so easy to leave an abusive relationship, there would be less persons getting beaten up by their better halfs. A little digging into the psyche of a victim or in this case James point of view would have been good too. There were also time lapses which confused me-weeks, months and even a year gone by from one to the next chapter. Left me hanging and wondering if I missed some things. So the storyline was good but I expected a little more of it. At times the story felt just to rushed, issues between the MC´s or James and his husband were sometimes more glossed over than actually dealt with.It was not so bad as it probaly sounds. I just wished some things would have been more flashed out because overall I got a good impression of what James went through and why Ethan was angry. less
