review 1: I saw Susan Campbell speak at the Mark Twain House and found her funny and insightful and interesting, so I picked up her memoir afterward. I liked parts of it very much, though I did find stretches of it - parts that weren't as much memoir as they were lessons in history - a little out of my league and/or beyond my level of interest. But I completely get why she needed to write this book, and it was nice/rewarding to see her come to a sort of understanding with herself and her fundamentalist upbringing. For the record, I do wish Goodreads would at least allow me to rate this two-and-a-half stars.
review 2: I didn't like this book as much I had expected to. The author goes into a lot of the history of fundamentalism but it is not presented in an organized way,
... morerather in bits and pieces. I didn't grow up in a fundamental religion, I was looking more to understanding what it was like on the personal side. I did learn a few interesting facts about the history of feminism that I didn't know but I was reading the book to gain an understanding of what it was like to grow up a fundamental. less

A good read if you come from a fundamentalist background and have had doubts. It read like my life.
