However guilty we feel, however much we try to stick it out, we’ve all encountered books that we just can’t get through. Here’s a few of the books that I had high hopes for but eventually abandoned, and why.
Carry On by Rainbow Rowell.
Eurgh. I go into more detail in my most recent de-clutter post, but basically I friggin’ hate this book. It’s a bad Harry Potter knock-off masquerading as a homage, it’s a highly disappointing read if you loved Fangirl and it’s STOOPID.
(Ha. I just went to check the link to the de-clutter post and I also started off with ‘Eurgh’ then.)
When God Was a Rabbit by Sarah Winman.
Obviously I had high hopes for this book because everyone talks about how amazing it is! I started reading it and was really enjoying it, and then all of a sudden it just got really, really boring. Maybe I should have kept going but I just didn’t like reading about the main character when she was older – if the whole book had been from the point-of-view of a child I think I would have stuck with it and it might even have become a new favourite.
Now I kind of regret throwing it out. I would still kind of like to know what happens… but I just couldn’t force myself through the rest of it. Should I do that terrible thing and Wiki the plot?
Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo.
I’m blaming you for this one, online community. There was a point when everyone was going on and on about this series, though it seems to have died down now. I’m always on the look-out for a great new book series so I always get taken in by the hype, but I just kept picking this one up, reading the first few pages, getting bored and putting it down for a few months, and then starting the whole pattern all over again.
Other book series the internet told me were great include anything by Sarah J. Maas and anything by Cassandra Clare, and I have now developed a bit of a twitch whenever I hear those author names or book titles. Nnngh.
Reality Boy by A. S. King.
You know how sometimes you just convince yourself you’ve found a new favourite book before you’ve even read the first page? From the premise I was convinced Reality Boy would be a fantastic read, but I tried so many times to read it – I tried really hard too – and just couldn’t get into it. The characters were unlikeable (which I think was the point, but who wants to read a story about arseholes?) and the writing was just… bland.
On another note, I’ve been looking through my old posts to find ideas for this one, and I realised it has been SO LONG since I’ve done a book haul. I mean, this is because I can’t really afford to do a book haul. But FUCK IT LET’S DO A BOOK HAUL SOON!
