review 1: I enjoyed reading it but it wasn't great. This book had a bunch of problems for me. First thing first, Eleanor is one of my least favorite female protagonist ever. She's annoying, stupid, never learns from her mistakes, and is weak mentally and physically. There were just some perfect opportunities in there for sass and for her to really step it up and she just didn't. If it weren't for how much Eleanor made me want to bang my head on a table I probably would have given it 4 stars. Also, it was very predictable. I honestly expected everything and there just weren't any plot twists. There were also some slow parts and I rarely ever get bored with books. Overall I might continue with the series and I might not. Literally the only reason I picked up the second book was becau... morese I saw a blurb by Sarah J Maas.
review 2: I liked this one better than its predecessor. Part of that was because Eleanor felt like she had some character this time, what with her struggles with right and wrong, necromancy both her fear of it and how she was drawn to it, lying to everyone, etc. It made her so much more interesting. I liked the addition of Oliver, and I hope we find out more about him in the next book, because it was a little bare bones here. A lot of heart, but not much information. The story was also more interesting; as engaging as the first book was, this was more so. I'll have to hunt down the last one stat so I can know how the story ends. less
