review 1: If you love vintage clothing, this is the book for you. Set in Madison, Wisconsin, it begins with the story of Violet Turner, a divorced woman in her late 30s who owns a shop called Hourglass Vintage. Violet is thrilled to have achieved her dream-come-true of owning such a shop, but she is lonely and longs to one day have children. Yet her no-good ex-husband seems to have worn out her belief in true love. Enter April Morgan, a customer who returns a vintage wedding dress. April is 18, pregnant and just about jilted, not so much by her fiancée, but by his snobby family. She becomes Violet's summer intern at the shop. Next comes Amithi Singh, an Indian woman whose thirty year marriage has exploded by adultery on her husband's part. Amithi is a talented seamstress, and begin... mores helping Violet with alterations. All three women work together on a vintage fashion show, hoping to make the big bucks needed for Violet to save her shop from the wrecking ball. This was a heartwarming read, laced with enticing descriptions of retro clothing and objects. All the characters go through crises, and you will be rooting for them to find happiness.
review 2: Very relaxing, enjoyable read. It's about three women, all at different stages of their lives, and how their lives intersect. The place of connection? A store selling beautiful vintage pieces. The unique way the author starts each chapter off, which I won't describe and therefore spoil for future readers, makes this book even more interesting, especially if you are a true fan of all things vintage. less
