review 1: Maybe 2.5 stars. It was a quick, easy read. Very predictable. Typical chic lit stuff. The story is fine, the characters are fine, but overall kind of ho-hum for me. I picked up this book because it was set in Madison, WI. But really, it could have been set in any college town. And as I always need to be a critic, I do not believe that many of Violet's classmates from tiny Bent Creek, WI would go to out-of-state schools. I come from small town Midwest - most would be going to UW-Eau Claire or River Falls or to technical school if they did decide to go to college. And I don't understand how Sam would be so anti-kid, given that he is a teacher. We never learn much about him, but he does teach biology and earth science. He must teach middle school, since there is a final an... mored he teaches both of those subjects. I have many little nit-picky things about this book, but I would rather spend my time starting a new book than putting them all in this review.
review 2: Really enjoyed reading this story! I love all things vintage, esp. vintage photos,it always makes me wonder what story there is behind the photo. And so it was in this book, the main character owned a vintage shop. I loved reading about all the treasures she had in her store.and What was very interesting was at the beginning of each chapter, the author would put in an insert of who brought in such item, etc.and it then proceeded with the character's story of that item. This story has three other characters, who would bring in to sell, or buy items in the vintage, they became friends with the main character, and their stories weave in, learning to support and cope with their present struggles. There is a quote from one of the characters, who is one of the three, and she quotes to Violet,"Will you promise me something, Violet? Don't make the same mistake I did and wait for the perfect time to do the things you want to do in life". This character was terminal and felt it was very important for her to pass on these words to her her friend. less
