review 1: A Fool’s Gold Christmas is another heartwarming romance from Susan Mallery. Fool’s Gold is a fictional small town in Northern California. With a small town setting you have a sense of community and close friendships. This closeness is a big change for “city slickers” Evie Stryker and Dante Jefferson. Both are new to Fool’s Gold and are in shock with the small town community and are also not excited with the upcoming holidays. In a way Evie and Dante are a modern day Grinch but not as extreme to be considered as a Scrooge. Both have had a heartbreaking past so this is why they don’t enjoy the holidays. Having this in common helps to form a friendship that builds to something more. But there is a major problem with their attraction – Evie is the sister of Da... morente’s friend and business partner. Another problem they face is they are both afraid to get hurt again so they avoid allowing themselves to care for people. This includes caring for family and friends, not only romantic relationships. But this book is called A Fool’s Gold Christmas so because of the Christmas setting you know this story will have a magical and happy ending. Even though this book was predictable I still enjoyed it.Susan Mallery has a great way of developing realistic and likeable characters. Evie and Dante have had a heartbreaking past but it was good to see their characters grow. They both deal with their heartache but also have some fun scenes. So this book had the right amount of drama that kept me entertained. A Fool’s Gold Christmas is book number 9.5 in the Fool’s Gold series. I haven’t read all the books in the series but I was able to follow along with the story. The author does a great job of giving quick recaps of previous books so it was a nice reminder. But there were so many characters I think new readers would be overwhelmed. So I think it would be better to limit the number of characters that are mentioned in a story. Now that I’ve read this I do want to go back to the last book I read from this series.A Fool’s Gold Christmas is a sweet romance and is perfect for the holiday season!(Read this for Ho-Ho-Ho Read-a-thon and Netgalley November)
review 2: Reviewed by AubreyBook provided by NetGalley for reviewReview originally posted at Romancing the BookIt has only been in recent years that I have started to read and enjoy Christmas themed books. I really liked the main characters of A Fool’s Gold Christmas. Both were very jaded about life in general and hated Christmas for their own reasons. Their mutual hatred for Christmas brought them closer but could it change their views? Will they start to enjoy Christmas or hate it more???Evie did not have the best childhood. She had 3 brothers and a mother that virtually ignored her because of the consequences of her birth. It was not her fault and she always found reasons to stay away and avoid her family. She had very good reason to be the way she was. Dante’s reason for avoiding relationships with women and settling down were different but still brought on the same heartache and need to run from love and affection.Evie comes to Fool’s Gold to heal from an accident and does expect to stay once she is healed. However, Fool’s Gold has another idea for her. Everyone that comes to the town tends to get sucked in by the people and their generosity. She does not see things changing between her and her family and she certainly does not see herself falling in love with a man that has stated he does not do the long haul.Dante is a gorgeous man that gets Evie and is just the man that can penetrate her walls. But he is scared of the feelings that come up when they are together. The power of love can heal both of them but are they willing to take the risk???A definite must read for fans of the Fool’s Gold series but also those that enjoy Christmas themed books with a very sweet HEA. less
