review 1: This is my first from Susan Mallery that I have to say I didn't enjoy quite so much, which is disappointing and I hate admitting that. I'm used to reading her romance novels but this was being more of a women's fiction novel, I found I didn't like as much. That's not to say I hated it although it did take me until at least halfway through the book before I really started to enjoy the story and some of the characters.Jenna Stevens is the main character and she's coming back home after a devastating divorce. She's a sous-chef and worked with her husband but found herself losing confidence in her talents and ability when her ex-husband would tell her she was not good at branching out of what she knows aka being creative with dish creations and also finding out that he was leav... moreing her after having extramarital affairs.Jenna is wimpy. That was my thought of her for the longest time. And so annoying. She had no backbone at all. Her husband told her she sucked and she believed it never once believing in herself. It was absolutely ridiculous. Then she came home and immediately bought space to open up a new retail shop despite having no retail experience....and then wondered why things were failing to being with. It was until more than halfway through when Jenna's love interest, Ellington, was brought into play that I finally started to like her because she started to become herself. As if that wasn't enough, having to get a divorce, shortly after she opens her new business, her birth parents decide to invade her life. And I do mean invade. Her birth mother, Serenity, is a hippie but while somewhat endearing, I found her to be completely oblivious to Jenna's feelings and really put herself into Jenna's life without so much as a thought to who overwhelmed she was making her daughter. Immediately coming in and acting like giving her away was nothing, calling her daughter, dismissing her business and her adoptive parents, I found her to be seriously whacked. As we find out later, it's because she was dying and wanted her daughter to know her but still, no reason to be so pushy without thinking about the feelings of others.I wish there had been more about Ellington and Jenna because they made a good match but I realized this wasn't as much about their romance but of Jenna regaining her sense of self after her divorce. However, that is probably why the sideline story of Violet became so interesting to me. Violet was much different and had a much harder life but at least she gave it a try with Cliff. Even though he turned out to be a dirtbag to the extreme, she was still willing to open herself up. Especially after he beat her, the fact that she was willing to give Dragon (one of Jenna's newly found brothers) a chance and to be part of a relationship again shows how much stronger character she has than Jenna. As for Dragon, no question he was the best character in the entire book but he didn't have nearly enough scenes. If he had his own story/novella, someone please tell me because that I'd read in a heartbeat! He and Violet were my two favorite characters from this and really made the book interesting for me.
review 2: Jenna Stevens has returned home to Texas after a divorce to start Grate Expectations, a cooking equipment store with demonstrations. She hires Violet to assist her in managing the store. Violet escaped an abusive childhood but was caught up in drugs however she has turned her life around and hopes for a bright future. Jenna has always known she was adopted but had no desire to seek out her biological parents; however one morning Tom and Serenity show up in her store announcing the universe has told them to find her. Jenna's life is turned upside down. How she comes to terms with both sets of parents, revitalizes her store with Violet's help and finds new love is an enjoyable story. Violet's story is intertwined with Jenna's although astute readers will pick up on clues to both stories before the ending. As in all of Mallery's books, kleenex will be needed. less
