review 1: How to Teach a Slug to Read caught my eye, because of its similarity to Diary of a Worm. However, this book was not one of my favorites. A boy shows Mama Slug how to teach Little Slug to read. The steps are numbered and are great tips for a mother teaching their child to read. The illustrations are colorful, but are not as detailed as other children books I have read. The author uses nursery rhymes within the story and some students may not be familiar with these if they are from a different culture. This may be a book that would be a good choice to share with parents for an open house in a preschool or kindergarten class. The tips can be very helpful to families with young children.
review 2: How to Teach a Slug to Read is a sweet story of a little boy w
... moreho is trying to help a mother slug teach her little slug how to read. He takes her through step by step, from attaching labels to little slugs favorite things to pointing out words that repeat. He teaches her how to sound out words and underline words in slug slime. But most importantly, he teaches her to be patient. I loved the message behind this book, the way it expressed the importance of reading, and the significance of those who teach others how to read. It is short and sweet, and the pictures are sure to please any young reader. I would sugget this book as an interactive read-aloud for younger children, grades Pre-Kindergarten to 1st. It provides a fabulous way to introduce the process of learning how to read. Pearson, S., & Slonim, D. (2011). How to teach a slug to read. Tarrytown, NY: Marshall Cavendish Children. less
