review 1: *I was given this book in exchange for an honest review*I really enjoyed this book! I loved how Sondra developed in the book and how she realizes where she really belongs even though she was happy with her original life but she discovers the wonderful feeling of freedom, strength, and love. The way that Sondra changed mentally and physically was the part that I enjoyed the most in this book, because even though she believes that she is not beautiful her smile is magic and brings joy to everyone's day and when she transforms her appearance as a dragon is described beautifully and I imagine it in my head and say "Wow"! Also, I hope that there is a second book because the way the book left off seemed that the story was not done and that we would see Derek again and that he wo... moreuld return for Sondra. I would really love for this book to have a sequel because I really want to know what happens with the love triangle of Sondra, Tolmac, and Derek. Overall, I LOVED this book and would recommend it to anybody who asks me what book they should read in their spare time.
review 2: I really liked the basic idea for this one. But it lost me after a couple chapters. Feels underwhelming, not many characters, not much worldbuilding.I like the cover and the premise. But so far, that's all.I'm surprised by the high rating so I'm struggling to read more. The dialogues all feel like I've read them before. No surpisses in any of the exchanges - between the sisters or at the ball. It feels very unoriginal. Lots of telling not showing. Cliches abound. Characterization is very thin. The whole family is made of cliches. Very little subtlety. The worldbuilding - it feels modern but with medieval-ish paint over. Simplistic in the setting and in the characterization. THe ladies in waiting are all gigly stupid gossips, the politicians - counselors are all shortsighted and without deeper experience and undertsanding (mostly in relation to Derek). Silly names - especially the princesses. There was something bugging me about the languge, the writing style. I'm an ESL so I don't quite trust myself to be an adequate judge but I've run into a review of this book on amazon that, I think, gets that too. "Part of my biggest problem with this book is not the story line itself, but the way it is written. It seems to vacillate between overly flowerly language and frank language, with a fair amount of grammatical and story inconsistencies" Yeah, pretty much. less
