review 1: This book is sure to be a story time favorite as the author/illustrator takes the reader on a shape by shape journey into the creation of an animal. The die-cuts make it easy to look at and compare the individual shapes and the illustrator also includes a name and image of the shape on the page as well. While some children will figure out the animal from the cover and illustrations, the final fold-out page is still a fun surprise.
review 2: Shape by Shape introduces basic shapes one by one through cut-outs on each page, as each shape is introduced and another page is turned, a creature begins to form as the shapes, colors, and cutouts all fit together to make one image. This book is very unique and so much fun for kids as they see the mystery creature come to
... moregether along the way. Each two page spread offers a colorful page that identifies the shape, and a black page that identifies the descriptive part of the creature to follow, such as “lots of sharp teeth” (black page with teeth cutouts) and “triangle” (identifies the teeth as triangles and shows the cutouts layered over the previous colorful cutouts). The book is pretty short but certainly no less entertaining; toddlers will enjoy learning their shapes and appreciate the artistic and unique cut-out collage effect. In addition, I really like that the author begins the book with a letter to parents encouraging them to identify shapes throughout their home, etc. with their children. I also like that the inside front and back covers have colorful shapes (each one labeled) set against a black background for more shape identification learning. Shape by Shape is definitely a fun and useful learning concept book that has a unique artistic flair that little ones will really enjoy. less

Cute little book. It has cut out shapes to lead to the mystery ending.

Very similar to Go away Big Green Monster, except with a dinosaur.
