review 1: I have to come clean... I chose this book because of the entertaining cover art and its genre (Steampunk & light Paranormal fantasy). Eh.... it was entertaining enough to keep reading, and I'll absolutely read the other works in the series, but in my opinion, the book could have benefited from a honkin' hefty dose of imagination and a bit of whimsy. A good example of this is in the tech of the novel. Rather blah, especially for a book with steampunk flair. Lazear shows a distinct lack of imagination when it comes to naming & describing the contraptions... cars that fly are called Flying Cars. Boards that hover are Hover Boards. I found myself screaming internally 'for crying out loud... wouldn't comething like Auto-Wing or Aether-bus or or Aether Glide have added a bit mor... moree somethin' something?'. This is such a tiny thing, but I found it rather distracting and it contributed to a rather lackluster 'world-building', unfortunately. I've read books in the Steampunk and Paranormal categories that are so imaginaitive, and really suck you into the elaborate universe that the author brings to life.... there wasn't much of that going on in this book, sadly. The faery lore was a bit more interesting... but again, nothing truly unique. I did enjoy the three main characters quite a bit. Lazear went into a bit more detail describing the personalities and motivations of her 'people. The most jarring aspect of the work is the fact that the book seemed to just end... full stop. Clearly, this was designed as the beginning of a series, but it was somewhat abrupt. Overall, I enjoyed reading Innocent Darkness, but not enough to call it a 'standout' in its genre, and certainly not enough that I'd recommend as a 'favorite'. Light, somewhat fluffy, rather cute. I'm crossing my fingers that the author gets a bit more whimssical and creative with the details of her world building in future books of the series.
review 2: I have read this once when it came out. Recently the saw the sequel in my library and decided to re-read the first one because I forgot what happened in it. Honestly. Wow. No wonder I forgot about the book. For a story that was supposed to be steam punk and fairies, it certainly let me down. The plot was unexciting, as well as the characters. Even the so called 'bad boy' character, who I usually like in books, I did not care for. less
