review 1: All I'm thinking right now, is why did I read a Dutch book again? It wasn't exciting, it wasn't titillating as I thought it would. The blurb sounded good, great even. But then, I read the full 300 pages of the novel and everything that could've been great, completely failed.Instead of telling you what happens in this book, I'll tell you what didn't happen. Marit, the single mother of two who hasn't been on a holiday let alone in a relationship for a few years, goes on holiday to France with her friend Fiona, the free-as-a-bird woman she met in the gym. Brian, a mysterious - no sorry, make that annoying - guy hitches a ride with them. Now this is where it already goes wrong. This Brian guy shouldn't be annoying and childish. He should be too hot to be true. The fact that Ma... morerit is "falling" for him is just sad and basically from the start of the book the reader is left to sigh at the idiocracy of taking this guy to France with them. Because the reader, unless they are in the same position as Marit, will not find this guy attractive; in the slightest. Another this that didn't happen was that there wasn't any surprise. More than halfway through the book another possible antagonist shows his ugly little face, but as with every other storyline it is dropped pretty quickly. So there is no doubt when it comes to the whodunnit part of the story. As with every Dutch book (sorry I don't mean to generalize, there are good writers out there - 1 or 2 at least), it's the way the author "plays" with words that's the most annoying. Blegh... This passage makes him sound like an idiot. In short, this wasn't a great book, even though the premise sounded promising. This is the only Dutch book I have in my collection in Abu Dhabi though so I guess I should just forget about it and move on, which is what I'm going to do now!
review 2: I read this book in one evening, while I was on holiday in Sardegna. I just couldn’t put it down! It was a good book, with a lot of action – a good thriller. I’m kind of glad our camping days were already over, because I don’t know if I would have been comfortable to go out camping a couple of days after reading this  It’s the kind of book that would make an excellent movie- I can just picture it when reading the story. I saw that there’s a lot more from this author, so I might check her other work out as well… To all my foreign friends: the book is from a Dutch author, and has just been released, so I don’t think there is an English translation yet. Look out for this author though, she has written a lot of other books, who might already be translated. And if this one makes it into translation: read it. You won’t be disappointed. less
