review 1: All in all I loved the story, it had a different and interesting concept on how the shifters came to be. However the story never gotten into what was happening to Kalista with her static issue, but I'm hoping it will be explained in book 2. Which I'm dying to read now because the ending just left my mind wondering what was going to happen next. I thought for sure she would have saw Caleb during the fight but I was so wrong about that. I'm divided on how I feel about Kalista on her Tristan situation on one hand it was annoying that one minute she liked him then the next she didn't. But finally they work out their issues which seemed like it lasted for about 5 minutes and then it came crashing down, so yeah a little divided there but at least she pulled it together so she lo... moreoked semi ok for her dad. The only thing I can think of that is really negative is the editing on this book, some very simple mistakes but a reader could most likely deduce what it was suppose to read for it to make sense. So I figured 1 star off for that. I would recommend this to any reader really. I wasn't fully sure at first if I would like this but I ended up enjoying the book and ready and willing to read the next in the series!
review 2: This book was ok.It had some great ideas behind it but for me it didn't come together how I would have liked. The things I liked:Kalista and her fathers relationship. Owen-he was the epitome of a teenage boy.The Greek mythology behind the shifting.I liked the twist with the Chloe, I was up in the air a bit but I had a feeling that it was between the two girls but just couldn't peg it until Kalista ran to the cabin. Well played. What I didn't like:Kalistas weak sob story about being shut down by her bestfriend after she confessed her love. She new he had commitment issues and that he only saw her as a mate yet there she was anyway dropping the big L word like an idiot while knowing it wasn't gonna happen and then blaming him for it. Pathetic. actually there were a lot of pathetic moments for our kal. She never seemed to stand up for herself or give honest answers(cough leading dean on cough), I like heroines that have bite and don't stand for crap. If there puny at the start that's fine but Kalista never grew a back bone until right at the end so her big moment just seemed out of character and unimpressive.Shipping dean off annoyed me. It seemed like an easy fix to a short lived love triangle. I hate love triangles but at least the others had guts. this dean+kal+tris thing fell flat on it butt before it even bothered to take off.The wording! That did my head in. Some sentences I was reading twice or three times because the words didn't flow well or there were words put in the place of others to make the book sound more sophisticated. Might have just been me but that's how I felt.I'm getting kind of sick of teenagers acting like their mature beyond there age. Kal was one of these. Reading books and sending time at home doesn't make you a boring grandma trapped in a teenage body. I would know, I loved reading and watching movies at home, I read so much my mum called my bedroom a cave that I hibernated in when I found a good book. This didn't mean that I hated party's or avoided acting like an idiot and doing crazy stuff with my friends. I'm sick of that misconception that all heroines need to be stiff as a board to be mature. Actually know what at 18 in my world mature is the last thing you need to be. 18 is when you make the stupidest mistakes then laugh at them when ur 21 then you laugh again at 23. I'm 23 and I still feel like a bumbling 17 year old trying to figure out life and where I stand in the world. at 18 you don't suddenly know what's what, who you are and what your doing. YA adult need to lighten up their characters and make their audience laugh. The whole female enemy thing had me yanking my hair out. Really? Really?! Total girl on girl hate for no other reason other then having a popular guy say hi to you does not happen, ever. Unless of course ur bieber and have crazy screaming stalker girls crying and threatening suicide because you 'found some body to love.' Yes, I just used bieber lyrics to prove my point and I'm 23, I should kill myself I know. What's left... Insta-and not so cleverly hidden-love was baseless just as all instalove is even if the words soul and mate were never uttered. Tristan seemed under developed. Vince and lamia were funny. Megan-I mean mingan- wasn't much more than stoic.Elan-my fave purely because of the mohawk was a breath of happy air, too bad there weren't more moments with any of the side characters.Bug bears was almost where I drew the line and threw my phone at the wall. It wasn't even funny.I found myself skipping some sections and bored with the pointless talking between main characters. The second pov didn't give me insight into the 'souls of evil' which disappointed me. And it was obvious where that was headed and really anticlimactic when there was no big reveal and yet there was every opportunity for one. Sigh.I liked the conversation with the flower. And hated the use if the world 'feline' to describe werewolves...need I point out the problem there?I laughed at the Gollum reference.I feel that the end of the book just fell apart. It was like I could hear the words "pointless drama" being whispered from the pages though I see another love triangle actually make that square with kal+Steve+tris+lasha-Tasha or whatever her name was- coming on.Any-who I believe I've ranted enough maybe even pointlessly so but there you go, I don't know if I'll read the second book I can't imagine it being much better then the first but here's to hoping. less
