review 1: I got this book for free on Amazon and I didn't know anything about it when I read it. It turned out to be an excellent book. A woman and her child are killed in a Haitian slum and a young girl named Libete takes it upon her self to figure out who did it and why. Libete is brave and plucky and will not be deterred from her mission. Along the way she learns why Haiti is the way it is and that peacekeepers are not always helpers. She practically raises herself and is not afraid of standing up for what is right. She is a heroine in every sense of the word.
review 2: Ted Oswald is an amazing writer and story-teller. At first I was confused with the layout of the ebook. For example, the lack of quotations for the dialogue scenes. There is also a lot of time jumping
... moreand multiple POV, but I continued to read and the author really pulls it off splendidly. The writing is top-notch. The murder/mystery is rather ho-hum, it's been done before and it was easy to figure out done it, but the writing and setting in Haiti's slums really draws you in and the book is hard to put down. I'll for sure read any other books from this author. less

I feel like I really know what life in Haiti is-brutal, corrupt, survival-mode, spiritual.
