review 1: Beside the story of Apollo and Daphne - because it is plain hilarious and always served as best threat for annoying guys (with the extra bonus of sounding incredibly intelligent for knowing myths) - I´ve always been most fond of the myth of Persephone. Abducted by the ruler of Hades (whom I imagine being rather gorgeous and not as blue haired as Disney presents him.) and forced to stay down there while mummy is searching every inch of the world for her. I love the idea of the trees and flowers grieving for Demeter´s loss.My Ex from Hell is exactly about this story. Except, the Gods are teens. And Persephone´s story slightly differs from the original version (Hades obviously isn´t that gorgeous and cool, Zeus obviously doesn´t care about his kids very much, Persephone ... moreobviously is a more powerful and important goddess than I gave her credit for). And there´s Kai who has taken Hades´ office (seducing Persephone and stuff) over successfully. As you maybe can imagine the plot doesn´t come up with some mind - blowing, never read before, Harry Potter is in danger elements. Things went down pretty predictably and from supportive Best Friend to bitchy Drama Queen and HOT love interest every character cliché is covered. Still I enjoyed the story. I wasn´t looking for something deep, but for a fun read and I totally got that. Reading the dialogues was like watching a pingpong match. Snarky answer follows stupid question and offensive comments are met with equally offensive remarks. Also, the writing style is fast, humorous and- well - teenie -ish. For me the book was totally okay and didn´t get boring. It was a pleasant read with likable characters and a storyline niche enough to continue the series.
review 2: I received this book free from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. So I had no idea what this book was about going into it, I just thought that the title sounded like a funny book. Once I realized that it had a Greek mythology twist I was really excited and then when it was a Hades/ Persephone retelling I was sold. I liked the storyline and how Persephone is now Sophie and how there are other descendants of the gods as well. Also I enjoyed how lots of of the myths were covered: the labyrinth, gorgeous nymphs, dragons, the oracle and lots more. My only issue was that the middle of the book was a bit slow, but it did pick up again near the ending. I'm mad at myself because I was also approved for book two from Netgalley, but I didn't have time to read it before it was archived :( Oh well I'll get my hands on it eventually.Overall, My Ex From Hell is an entertaining read and I do want to continue the series. I would recommend this novel to mythology lovers. less
