review 1: To be honest, I think this book is overrated. It is a *very* good introductory guide to Marxism that avoids patronizing simplicity on the one hand and academic jargon on the other. Sometimes it was incredibly sharp, especially on discussions such as democracy, the state and violence, but at other times, I thought it was a bit all over the place. E.G. Like that paragraph when the barbarity of capitalism is used to slyly justify Soviet wrongdoings, then he puts forward an argument for market-socialism and then he disagrees with himself, and then he says it's up to class. I'm being over-pernickety, but sometimes it did baffle me. Nevertheless, a good introductory guide to Marxism, that I'm sure has dispelled loads of myths and attracted a good dozen people to radical poli... moretics.
review 2: All I can say is that, as a non-Marxist, this is an excellent apologetic for a certainly unusual strain of Marxist theory. Eagleton, for a thinker who I usually find more inclined towards armchairs than practical thought, paints a palatably realistic portrait of Marxian economics and its application. If you believe in giving each side their fair shake, I would recommend this book to an Austrian, Keynesian, Distributist—anyone looking for an even-handed reflection on Marxism. less
